Also called Soft rush. Cool season, tall, rhizomatous, native perennial grasslike. Provides shoreline protection with its dense fibrous root system. Generally occurs in fresh water to brackish marshes, swamps, ditches and moist seasonal wetlands. Tolerance to low pH and heavy metals allow it to survive in polluted conditions. Depended upon by a wide range of mammals and birds for food and habitat.
